Fulani Traditional Attire; Mudukare

The traditional fulani attire of Nigeria is a colourful myriad of red, blue and green embroidery, delicately woven into a palette of white fabric. This uniquely cultural piece is known as the Mudukare garment.

Local designers say it takes them 3 – 4 days of weaving to complete one piece.

For the women, the Mudukare is a sleeveless half-top worn over a wrapper. This traditional look would be incomplete without the accompanying beads and bracelets worn on the hands, head and waist. The women wear their head in five long straight braids that are usually decorated with cowries and silver coins that have been passed down through generations.

The men wear a similar shirt style. The shirt is also sleeveless, but long in length and is accompanied by a pair of three-quarter shorts. On their heads, they wear a conical-shaped hat called noppiire.

The styles worn by the Fulani differ from region to region and according to gender. The beauty in their heritage is clearly seen and appreciated by many.
