7 Tips to Help You Wear Your Umushana with Style

Â
The Umushana is the traditional attire of Rwanda. It is also worn in Burundi and part of Uganda.Â
It is usually worn during special occasions, especially weddings and is fast becoming a fashion item.
Thinking of adorning the Umushana? Pay attention to the following tips:
1. Carefully select your fabric type
Umushanana is usually made of silky and polished materials which helps it flow. Stiff cotton fabrics can give a heavy look and feel. The outfit comprises a wrap skirt bundled around the waist and a sash draped on a shoulder.
2. Choose your colours and patterns with your body shape and size in mind. Darker colours and patterns are better if you’re curvy or plus size.
3. The typical length of the Umushana should be one that covers your shoes from your waist.
4. Make sure you select a top or blouse that suits your size complexion and the Umushana. Blouses or tops worn with Umushana are usually skin tight or stretch. They can also be long sleeve or armless tubes.
5. To drape your Umushana elegantly, you need to pay attention to the pleats. It should go round your body with even and neatly tucked pleats, and be pinned securely and discreetly on your shoulder.
6. Accessorise your Umushana with shoes, jewellery and a clutch purse. Remember, less is more; contrast a shinny and bright Umushana with small and dainty jewellery. If your Umushana is a dull colour you can brighten your outfit with sparkling jewellery or shoes. Rwandese are very particular about shoes!
7. Your hair should be held up in a bun, also wear a head band or tie a ribbon across your forehead over the bun.
