1. Hair Products

Using hair products that promote hair growth is really not necessary as the hair grows even fastest during childhood. Having a good hair Regimen for your little black girl is enough to guarantee healthy hair growth.

2. Shampooing and Conditioning

It is advisable to use a sulfate-free shampoo for little girl’s hair. You can also use good conditioning products for children’s hair.

3. Combing

Before you start combing your little girl’s hair gently moisten with water or detangler. Then use your fingers to run through the hair as the first step of combing, before using a wide tooth comb. You can the move on to a smaller tooth comb after you’re convinced the hair is tangle-free.

After detangling apply a water-based moisturizer to your girl’s hair, paying close attention to the hair tips. Give the hair another round of combing to maintain it’s detangled state and then apply a light oil or butter to lock in the moisture.

Then you can go ahead to style the hair.

4. Drying

Your child’s hair should be dried carefully in a soft squeezing movement rather than rubbing.

Rather than using the regular cotton towel, use a t-shirt or microfibre towel.

If you are in a hurry and don’t have the time to air dry your girl’s hair (which is preferable) use a blow dryer on a low setting. Part the hair into about 4 or 6 portions and dry each portion after the other to avoid the hair being overexposed to heat.

5. Ponytails

Be careful not to make the ponytails too tight. Check for changes in your child’s facial appearance (especially the eyes) and make sure she can move her facial muscles without difficulty.

Using clip on bows or Combs is better for toddlers especially if it needs some effort to make a ponytail (don’t force it).

6. Braids and Cornrows

When doing braids or cornrows for your child pay attention to the hairline. Braids or cornrows near the front or edges should be made loosely.

7. Hair Extensions

It is preferable not to braid a child’s hair with extensions till they are above 7years.

8. Night Care

Always remove hair accessories like bows, combs and bands from your little girl’s hair on her way to bed. Pigtails should be loosened also to relieve tension from packing and prevent unnecessary discomfort to the scalp or hair as your child turns in bed.

9. Chemical Relaxers

If you decide to relax your black child’s hair, it’s advisable to wait till she is at least 10 years old.
