What is the Fugu Cloth?

Fugu means cloth in Moshie language in Ghana. The Moshies who migrated from Burkina Faso to settle in Northern Ghana, were the ones who brought in this fabric.

It is also known as Bingba or Batakari in other parts of Ghana.

The fugu fabric is made from cotton threads woven on simple hand looms into strips that are usually four inches wide.

To make clothes, these strips will have to be sewn together (this process is just like the Aso Oke fabric from Western Nigeria).

A typical fugu smock is a v-necked top sorrounded by embroidery, with two pockets which are sort of “hidden”.

It is an easy to wear, comfortable everyday outfit.

The fugu smock assumed great significance when President Nkrumah along with his aids chose to wear it in declaring Ghana’s independence in 1957.
