Can Lobola be returned?

Returning lobola is rare, even though it can be claimed according to tradition.

If the man is responsible for the breakup of the marriage, he will he has no claims to the lobola. However, if the woman is responsible for the break up of the marriage, part of the lobola is returned and part is retained according to the law.

Other factors that determine the fair return of the lobola are:

The number of children born in the marriage

The amount of lobola already paid.

A man can also demand for a return of the lobola if the wife dies prematurely.
