10 Table Dining Rules When Eating Out or With Friends

So Valentine’s day is fast approaching and lots of people will be going on dinner dates so it’s important not to make a mess of the outing by learning good dining habits.

Here are brief notes from Zeelicious vlog on how to behave at the table, whether at home or in a restaurant:

  • Ladies, do not place your bags on the table. This disrupts the symmetry of the flow of the table setup, making the table look chaotic or clustered. Some high end restaurants provide you with hooks where you can hang your bag by the table or an extra stand to place your bag. You can simply place your bag on the chair beside you, but do not put your bag on the floor.
  • Do not slouch when sitting, you need to sit up with your straight.
  • Wait for your fellow diners to settle in as well before placing your order.
  • When placing your order do not yell or shout for the waiter. All you need to do is to make attempts to establish eye contact with the waiter.
  • In a proper restaurant a waiter would give you some time to settle in before bringing the menu, but if there is a delay simply try to get that eye contact.
  • When you’re done with your menu close and place it on the table. A well trained waiter knows that when you close the menu and drop it on the table, you are ready to make your order. But as long as you still have that menu open in your hand or you’re still looking through it, it means that you haven’t yet made up your mind.
  • Put your phones out of sight, away from the dinner table, and turn them off.
  • Do not apply makeup on the table. Excuse yourself quietly and walk to the ladies room and do that.
  • Do not yawn or sneeze after dinner or dining table.
  • Cover your mouth while you pick your teeth.
  • Use polite words like “please”, “May I”, “Can you”, and “Thank you” while being served or when requiring assistance at the table.
