Kelewele Recipe

Kelewele is a spicy fried plantain dish and popular street food sold mostly at night in Ghana. 

 

Ingredients for 6-8 

Preparation and Cook time : 45 minutes

 

Ingredients

4-6 plantains

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper or red pepper

1/2 teaspoon ginger

1 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons water or lemon juice

Vegetable oil

 

Preparation

Peel the plantains and cut them into cubes

Peel and grate the ginger

Grind together ginger, pepper, and salt. 

Mix with little water (2 tablespoons).

Add the plantain cubes to the spice mixture and  marinate for about 10minutes.

Heat enough oil to deep-fry the plantains. 

Turn them over once until golden brown on both sides. 

Remove fried plantains and place on absorbent paper to remove the excess oil. 

Enjoy!

Kelewele is best eaten hot and freshly made.
