Why Are Wedding Cakes Usually in 3tiers?

Originally, the bottom tier was eaten at the wedding ceremony.

The middle tier was to beshared and distributed after the wedding ceremony.

The top tier was to be eaten during the first child’s christening. Now that doesn’t apply any more… Couples simply eat the top tier during their first wedding anniversary.
