10 Memorable Places to Visit in Ghana

Whenever you find yourself in Ghana be sure to visit at least one of these fascinating tourist sights that would leave you with memories of the wonders of creation and history of mankind:

1. Wechiau Hippopotamus Sanctuary

The hippopotamus sanctuary is a protected area for hippos stretching along 40 km of the eastern bank of the Black Volta River. It is home to one of only two remaining groups of hippopotamus in Ghana.

Birdlife is also spectacular, with over 200 species on record. You can go on a river safari in a dugout canoe and see the resident hippo group, birds and mammals as well as fishermen plying their nets.

2. Boti Falls

The Boti Falls reserve is located 17km North-east of Koforidua, the eastern regional capital. It is a little over 30 minutes drive from Koforidua and over 90 minutes from Accra depending on your means of transportation.

Get ready to hike for about an hour to the Umbrella Rock, see the Three- Headed Palm in the small village, and walk down the 250 steep steps to the breathtaking Boti Falls.

3. Christiansborg Castle 

This imposing edifice is a 17th-century castle located on the shores of Osu.  For many years it served as the seat of government, then simply referred to as the Castle.

It was constructed by Europeans and is made up of approximately 80 castles, forts and lodges stretching along the 400-mile coastline between Keta and Beyin, formerly and notoriously known as the “Coast of Guinea” and “White Man’s Grave”.  Today it houses the Presidential museum.

4. Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum

The Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and memorial park is located in downtown Accra, the capital of Ghana.

It is dedicated to the influential Ghanaian President, Kwame Nkrumah.

The memorial complex was dedicated in 1992, and is situated on the site of the former British colonial polo grounds in Accra.

5. Kintampo Waterfalls

Kintampo waterfalls is one of the highest waterfalls located on the Pumpum river, a tributary of the Black Volta, in Bono, Eastern Ghana.

Kintampo, known as Sanders Falls during the colonial days, is formed by three main drops where the longest drop measures 25 metres (82 ft) in height.

6. Cape Coast Castle

The Cape Coast Castle (Swedish: Carolusborg) is one of about forty “slave castles”, or large commercial forts, built on the Gold Coast of Ghana by European traders. 

It was originally a centre for the trade in timber and gold but later transformed to the trans-Atlantic slave trade zone, where slaves were kept before they were loaded onto ships and sold in the Americas, particularly the Caribbean.

This “gate of no return” was the last stop before the slaves crossed the Atlantic Ocean.

7. Kakum National Park

This is Ghana’s most visited tourist attraction with a canopy walkway suspended up to 27 meters above the forest floor made up of trees that are over 300 years old.

The Kakum Park is also a great site for bird watchers, with over 300 species, mammals including the forest elephant, leopard, bongo, bushbuck and many primates.

8. Lake Bosomtwe

Lake Bosomtwe is a circular lake covered with trees, lush, and surrounded by various settlements of fishing and farming villages. 

Lake Bosumtwe also sometimes spelled Bosomtwi, is the only true inland lake in the country located in the Ashanti region of Ghana.

9. Ote Falls

Ote Waterfall is a 45-minute walk from the town of Amedzofe in the Volta region.

10. Tano Boase Sacred Grove

The Tano Boase grove is believed to be the cradle of Bono Civilization. It is located in the Techiman Municipality of the Brong Ahafo Region.

The Grove served as a hideout for the Bono People during the slave trade and inter-tribal wars many many years ago. It also serves as a place for recreation, religious and sport activities.
