African Steamed Bread (Ujeqe) Recipe

What is Ujeqe?

Ujeqe is steamed bread that is often served with meat, curry or chakalaka. When you get to attend the a South African function like a wedding, Umembeso, Lobola celebration…you will most likely be served Ujeqe as part of the menu.

Steamed Bread Recipe

Ingriedients

500g cake flour

1 teaspoon 5g instant yeast

3 teaspoons sugar

pinch of salt

350ml -400ml warm water

vegetable/ olive oil ( to line the enamel/ stainless steel bowl)

Instructions

Mix all the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl.

Addwarm water as needed.

Massage until you get a pliable (elastic) bread dough.

Leavethe dough in a bowl to rise for 30 minutes, preferably in a warm place- You can even leave it in the sun and cover the bowl with a clean dish cloth.The dough should have doubled in size.

Knead(massage) the dough a couple of times.Your dough is now ready to cook.

Rubyour enamel/ stainless steel bowl with oil and put your dough in it.

Putboiling water in a big pot, place your enamel/ stainless steel bowl in water for the bread to steam for 30 minutes.

Leaveujeqe to cool before serving.
