The Significance of Lobola

The lobola process is when the man and his family pay the bride price (dowry) to the girl’s family for the right to marry their daughter.

The lobola negotiation is a sign of approval from both families of the marriage of the son and daughter. If the lobola is not paid, it means the union was not endorsed by the families.

Traditionally, lobola can be about 6 cows or more depending on the bride’s family and the status of the bride; the more educated the lady is,  the higher the Lobola, also if she is a virgin the groom will be expected to pay more.

These days families prefer to receive Lobola in cash.
