Q and A

Can premature Greying of hair be reversed?

Got Premature Grey Hair? Here are 10 Facts You Should Know.

Having streaks of grey or white hair can be quite embarrassing especially when you are in your 20s or 30s.  I’ve got about four strands now and want to nip this issue in the bud. So if you are a good student like me then read on:

1. Grey hair is caused by the slowing down of melanocyte activity which results in  the reduction and eventually absence of  “melanin” (the pigment that gives hair its natural colour).

2. Premature greying is caused by lack of oil gland production in the follicles of the scalp. As a result the hair lacks the required nutrition and it starts turning grey.

3. Your diet can prevent or result in the production of grey hair.

Insufficient Vitamin B 12, Copper, Iron and Iodine can cause premature greying. You should also be careful with excessive junk food and processed food.

Good sources of vitamin B 12 are red meat, sardines, salmon, crab, eggs, milk, soymilk and some cereals.

Food sources of iron are liver, chicken, turkey, beef, pork, almond nuts, peanuts, cashew nuts, beans, whole grains and dark leafy vegetables.

Rich sources of iodine are sea vegetables, potatoes, yoghurt, tuna fish, strawberry. Foods rich in copper are cashew, soy beans, walnut, mushrooms.

4. Most chemicals found in hair products like hair dyes are harmful for hair in the long run.

5. Worry, anxiety, stress, anaemia, hormonal imbalance, thyroid disease can also cause premature greying.

6. Indian Gooseberry which is also known as amla is one of the best natural remedies for treating grey hair. It has anti ageing properties and is also rich in anti-oxidants and vitamin C.

7. Curry leaves, Coconut oil, Henna, Black Tea and Almond oil are natural remedies for premature grey hair.

8. Adding curry leaves in your diet will help restore lost pigment to your hair. You can also boil a handful of curry leaves in coconut oil for about 5 minutes, strain and massage into your scalp. Try to leave oil overnight then wash off the next day or atleast 2hours.

9. Henna not only naturally colours your hair but also strengthens it.

Make a paste out of henna powder (preferrably with lemon juice), apply to your scalp and leave on for between 2-3 hours. You can shampoo your hair afterwards.

10. Drinking enough water also helps to flush toxins out of the body system.
