South Africa’s Umbondo Ceremony; What It Really Means

The Umbondo ceremony is one of the rituals that must be followed in the lead-up to your big day if you are planning a traditional wedding. Umbondo is all about giving gifts in exchange for favors. Everything revolves around the bride’s family giving the groom’s family gifts and food (groceries).
In appreciation for the lobola (bride price) they paid and the Umembeso (gift to the bride’s family) ceremony, the bride gives her in-laws a variety of gifts and groceries during the ceremony. Frequently, it is the last step before a couple enters into a traditional marriage (Umabo).
The bride takes her gifts in a basket or basin that also contains some “beverages,” cookies, and teaware. One of the girls who is traveling with her will serve as her maid. Because there are some places the bride isn’t allowed to visit, the maid’s job is to assist the bride with errands.
The bride also brings a variety of food items, including rice, mielie meal, samp, cooking oil, traditional food, etc., to the groom’s family in preparation for the big day. Her mother-in-law receives these presents from her family and neighbors. Friends, family, and well-wishers usually gather for a large celebration that includes a feast.
