What is a Typical Yoruba Traditional Engagement List like?

Eru Iyawo (Yoruba Engagement List)

The “eru iyawo” is a list given by the bride’s family to the groom’s family before the wedding. This list contains gift items required to be presented to the bride and her family by the groom’s family on the wedding day.

 

Common items on the Yoruba Engagement List are:

Holy Bible 

Engagement Ring

1 Box of Clothes, Shoes, Bags and Jewelry

1 Umbrella

42 Tubers of Yam

42 pieces of dried fish

42 pieces of bitter kola

42 Kolanuts

42 Alligator Peppers

1 dish of peppered corn meal (Aadun)

1 Keg of Palm oil

4 Cartons of Malt

4 Crates of Soft Drinks

1 Carton of Fruit Juice

1 Carton of bottled water

1 Carton Non Alcoholic Wine

1 bottle of honey

1 bag of salt

Basket of fruits

1 Goat ( or Cow or Chicken)

Owo Ori (Dowry)
